The Edo State Government, under Governor Monday Okpebholo, has formally banned several transport unions and a private consultant from all forms of levies and revenue collection across the state. The directive, issued on August 6, 2025 through Secretary to the State Government Umar Musa Ikhilor, names the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), ANNEWAT, Drivers on Wheels, and Atalakpa Recovery Concept Limited, as entities involved in unauthorised and exploitative revenue practices.
According to the government, credible intelligence revealed that these groups, initially granted limited approval to assist the Edo State Internal Revenue Service (EIRS), had deviated sharply from their roles. Instead, they allegedly engaged in extortion, intimidation, and harassment of motorists, traders, and road users under the guise of revenue compliance enforcement, behavior officially described as economic sabotage and a betrayal of public trust.
As of this declaration, no member of the public is to pay any dues, levies, or service charges to these unions or the private consulting firm. The government warned that any such demands are illegal and should be immediately reported to the Edo State Special Taskforce, headed by SP Michael Anetor, via the hotline 08038157126.
Law enforcement agencies, led by the Commissioner of Police, have been mandated to act swiftly against any individuals or groups found violating the ban. The state reiterated that any attempt to collect unlawful fees will attract legal consequences.
Governor Okpebholo’s administration affirmed its determination to reform the revenue collection framework in Edo State, ensuring transparency, accountability, and protection of citizens from exploitation under any pretext.
