LAGOS, July 25, 2025 – The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has launched a full-scale investigation into a startling discovery of a parcel containing over ₦426 billion worth of foreign currency intercepted at a Nigeria Postal Service (NIPOST) facility in Lagos.
According to insider sources, the large cache of foreign currency, neatly concealed in a suspicious package, was intercepted during a routine security screening at one of NIPOST’s major logistics hubs in the city. The exact currencies and denominations involved in the seizure have not yet been officially disclosed, but preliminary estimates value the parcel at over $300 million (approximately ₦426 billion at the current exchange rate).
EFCC operatives have since cordoned off the area and initiated a forensic examination of the contents, while also tracing the source and intended destination of the parcel. Early intelligence suggests the funds may be linked to a transnational money laundering ring attempting to exploit domestic courier systems to move illicit funds undetected.
Confirming the development, an EFCC spokesperson said the commission is working closely with NIPOST management and other relevant agencies to unravel the individuals or syndicates behind the suspicious shipment.
“This is a significant breakthrough in the fight against financial crimes,” the EFCC official said. “We are leaving no stone unturned. Our preliminary findings indicate that this could be part of a larger network engaged in smuggling illicit funds.”
The EFCC also hinted that arrests may soon follow as investigations progress, and warned individuals and organizations against using national infrastructure for illegal financial operations.
This incident has raised fresh concerns about the abuse of public logistics platforms for criminal purposes and may prompt new regulations on parcel scanning and courier oversight in the country. NIPOST has pledged full cooperation with the ongoing investigation and reaffirmed its commitment to upholding national security standards.
