The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Awka Zonal Command, has secured the conviction of nine internet fraudsters before the Federal High Court in Awka, Anambra State.
According to a statement by the EFCC, the convicts were arraigned on separate one-count charges bordering on impersonation and obtaining by false pretense, offenses which violate Section 22(3) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc) Act, 2015.
The court found all nine individuals guilty and sentenced them accordingly. Various items, including mobile phones, laptops, and luxury items used in the commission of the crimes were forfeited to the Federal Government, while the convicts were also ordered to make restitution to their victims.
The EFCC reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying the fight against cybercrime across Nigeria, especially among youths. The agency also urged parents, schools, and community leaders to continue sensitizing young people about the dangers and legal consequences of internet fraud.
