EFCC Warns Students in Lagos Against Misusing the Internet

Lagos, June 22, 2025 – The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has issued a stern warning to students in Lagos, urging them to avoid the negative use of the internet and to channel their digital skills into constructive, lawful pursuits.

The message was conveyed by EFCC’s Acting Zonal Director in Lagos, Assistant Commander Michael T. Wetkas, who led a sensitisation seminar with members of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS). Wetkas called on the youth to reject cybercrime, emphasising the importance of creativity and original thinking. “The strength of any nation lies in its youths… the country needs a generation of progressive individuals who will maximize their talents,” he said .

The Commission highlighted the increasing sophistication of internet-enabled crimes, such as sextortion, and urged students to act as whistle-blowers against cybercrime activities. EFCC representatives also warned about the dangers of engaging with unknown individuals online and the use of unsecured links that could compromise personal data .

The initiative aligns with earlier responses from EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede, who recently cautioned youths against the misuse of social media and called for transparency and ethical conduct—encouraging students to become agents of change rather than perpetrators .

Attendees were reminded that the internet should serve as a tool for research, education, and innovation—not crime. The EFCC reaffirmed its readiness to collaborate with student bodies and schools to strengthen awareness campaigns, promote digital ethics, and protect the nation’s image and future leaders.

Parents, educators, and stakeholders are encouraged to support these efforts by fostering responsible digital habits and encouraging young Nigerians to use technology for good.
