As preparations intensify ahead of the Eid-el-Kabir celebration, the Nigeria Police Force in Jigawa State has issued a strong advisory to the public, particularly livestock traders, to remain alert and cautious against the circulation of counterfeit currency during the festive period.
The warning was issued on Thursday in Dutse through a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of the Jigawa State Police Command, Superintendent Lawan Shiisu. He noted that with the increase in commercial activities, especially the sale and purchase of sacrificial animals, criminal elements may attempt to infiltrate livestock markets with fake naira notes in a bid to defraud unsuspecting sellers.
According to SP Shiisu, the advice became necessary in light of past experiences where fraudulent individuals took advantage of the festive rush to circulate counterfeit money. He cautioned traders, especially those selling rams, cows, and other animals typically used for the Sallah sacrifice, to thoroughly scrutinize the currency they receive during transactions.
“As we approach the Sallah celebrations, we are calling on livestock dealers and the general public to be vigilant and watch out for persons attempting to pay with counterfeit currency,” he stated. “These activities tend to spike during festive periods when market transactions are high and vigilance is often low.”
SP Shiisu further urged members of the public to report any suspicious behavior or individuals found attempting to use fake money to the nearest police station or law enforcement officer. He reassured residents that the police are on alert and will take swift action against anyone found engaging in financial fraud or related criminal activities.
Meanwhile, in line with Islamic tradition, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has officially announced that Eid-el-Adha will be observed on Friday, June 6, 2025, following the sighting of the Dhul Hijjah crescent moon. The announcement sets the tone for Muslim faithful around the world to commence preparations for the sacred festival, which involves the symbolic sacrifice of animals in honor of Prophet Ibrahim’s obedience to divine command.
In Nigeria, the buildup to Eid-el-Kabir is typically marked by increased economic activity, especially in livestock markets. The police, therefore, are intensifying their awareness campaigns to prevent economic sabotage and protect both buyers and sellers from fraudsters exploiting the season.
As the celebrations draw nearer, authorities are reminding the public that vigilance, civic responsibility, and prompt reporting of suspicious activities remain crucial to ensuring a safe and hitch-free Eid celebration across Jigawa and beyond.
