The Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), also known as KAI, has successfully secured the conviction of eight individuals for environmental offences, including public urination and breach of peace in the Yaba area of Lagos State.
The Corps Marshal, Major Olaniyi Olatunbosun Cole (rtd), disclosed the arrests and prosecution at the Agency’s Command Headquarters in Bolade, Oshodi. According to him, the agency’s proactive monitoring across all five divisions of the state led to the apprehension of the offenders, who were subsequently arraigned before Magistrate Oshikoya of the Special Offences (Mobile Court) sitting in Oshodi.
The eight defendants were charged with violating Section 168 (1)(d) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015, which addresses conduct likely to cause a breach of peace, as well as Section 5(1) of the Lagos State Public Health Law, 2015, which criminalizes open urination and other forms of public indecency.
Magistrate Oshikoya sentenced all eight to one month in jail, a ruling the Corps Marshal described as a strong deterrent to others who may engage in similar illegal acts.
“The judgement reinforces the government’s zero-tolerance policy on public indecency and environmental misconduct. We remain resolute in our mandate to restore and uphold environmental sanity across Lagos,” Cole said.
He further warned street traders who persist in displaying goods on road medians, setbacks, lay-bys, and verges to desist from such practices, reiterating that acts like open urination and defecation are outlawed in Lagos and will be prosecuted accordingly.
The enforcement drive, he noted, is part of a broader effort by the Lagos State Government to promote public hygiene, safety, and environmental discipline.
