As the 2027 election approaches, an ally of former Kaduna State Governor Mallam Nasir El-Rufai confirmed on Monday, March 10, that El-Rufai has defected from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). In a viral letter circulating on social media, El-Rufai, a founding member of the APC, announced his resignation from the party.
“As a founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), I have cherished memories of working with fellow compatriots to negotiate the merger of political parties that formed the APC. Since 2013, I had hoped that my personal values would align with those of the APC until my retirement from politics. However, developments over the past two years have shown that the current leadership has no desire to acknowledge or address the party’s unhealthy situation. I have raised concerns both privately and publicly about the party’s erratic trajectory. At this point in my political journey, I have decided to seek another platform to pursue the progressive values I hold dear. Today, March 10, 2025, I submitted a letter resigning from the APC to my ward in Kaduna, effective immediately. After consulting with my mentors, colleagues, and loyalists, I have decided to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and adopt it as the platform for our future political engagements and activities.”
Interestingly, Muyiwa Adekeye, El-Rufai’s spokesperson, has not yet responded to the viral resignation letter. However, sources within El-Rufai’s camp have confirmed that all arrangements have been made for the former governor to submit his resignation letter to the APC at his ward in Kaduna State. An ally, who served as a commissioner under El-Rufai’s administration, informed Daily Trust that El-Rufai would be leaving the APC for the SDP today, Monday, March 10, 2025.
The former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) suggested that he might leave the ruling APC, stating that the party had already abandoned him.
