Gusau, Zamfara State, July 25, 2025 – The Emir of Gusau, Alhaji Ibrahim Bello, has passed away at the age of 71, bringing an end to a reign marked by peacebuilding and community development in Zamfara State.
The news of his death was confirmed by the Zamfara State Government in a statement issued on Friday morning. According to the release, the monarch died after a brief illness at a hospital in Abuja, where he had been receiving medical attention.
Alhaji Ibrahim Bello, who ascended the throne in 2004, was widely respected across the North-West region for his calm leadership, efforts to promote unity, and firm stance against banditry and rural violence that plagued parts of the state during his reign.
Governor Dauda Lawal described the Emir’s death as a profound loss to the people of Gusau and the entire state. “His Highness was not just a custodian of tradition but also a bridge-builder who worked tirelessly for the progress of his people. He will be sorely missed,” the governor said in a tribute.
Residents of Gusau trooped to the palace in solemn gatherings, paying their respects and offering prayers. The late Emir was known for his close relationship with the grassroots, regularly engaging youth and traditional titleholders in his efforts to foster peace and social development.
Funeral prayers are expected to be held in accordance with Islamic rites later today in Gusau, with dignitaries from across the nation anticipated to attend.
The Emir leaves behind wives, children, and grandchildren, as well as a legacy of humility, wisdom, and selfless service to his people. Plans for the appointment of a successor will be announced by the Gusau Emirate Council in due course.
