Empowering Engineers Through Knowledge-Driven Training to Deliver Safer, More Durable Roads

ABUJA – The Federal Ministry of Works has reaffirmed its commitment to improving Nigeria’s road infrastructure by equipping engineers with knowledge-driven training, aimed at enhancing technical capacity, ensuring quality control, and delivering safer, longer-lasting roads across the country.

This pledge was made during a capacity-building workshop held on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, in Abuja, where civil engineers and road project managers from various states gathered for a multi-day intensive training focused on modern engineering practices, material durability, and safety compliance.

Speaking at the event, Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, emphasized that the future of Nigeria’s road infrastructure depends not only on funding but on technical expertise, innovation, and strict adherence to global standards.

“We are no longer in an era of trial and error. Our engineers must be ahead of the curve, equipped with the latest technologies, construction methodologies, and sustainability frameworks,” the minister said. “This training is an investment in our workforce to ensure we deliver roads that are safe, strong, and sustainable.”

The programme, organised in collaboration with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) and several international partners, covered modules on pavement design, geotechnical evaluation, quality assurance, asphalt lifecycle performance, and climate-resilient road engineering.

Participants also engaged in case studies and simulation sessions focused on common engineering failures in Nigeria’s road projects, with facilitators offering global best practices to mitigate such occurrences.

According to the ministry, the training is part of a broader national strategy to reduce the frequency of premature road failures, bridge collapses, and erosion-related damages. It also aligns with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises infrastructure development as a key driver of economic growth and national integration.

Representatives of COREN and the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) commended the initiative, describing it as a timely and much-needed intervention to restore professional pride and engineering excellence in the construction sector.

The ministry confirmed that similar training sessions will be held regionally across the six geopolitical zones to reach a wider pool of professionals involved in federal and state road projects.
