England’s Loss, Netherlands’ Gain: Arjan Veurink Set to Become Dutch Women’s Head Coach

In a significant development for women’s football, England assistant coach Arjan Veurink is set to leave his role with the Lionesses after this summer’s European Championship to become the head coach of the Netherlands women’s national team. Veurink, who has been an integral part of Sarina Wiegman’s coaching staff since 2017, will take over the Dutch team following the Euros, marking a new chapter in his career.

Veurink’s journey with Wiegman began when they led the Netherlands to victory in the 2017 European Championship and reached the final of the 2019 World Cup. He rejoined Wiegman in England in 2021, contributing to the Lionesses’ historic win at Euro 2022 and their run to the World Cup final in 2023.

The 38-year-old coach has signed a contract with the Netherlands that extends until the 2029 Euros. Veurink expressed his excitement about this new challenge, stating it feels like a natural progression in his career. He emphasized his long-held ambition to lead the Dutch national team and is eager to build on his experience as Wiegman’s assistant.

Before departing, Veurink remains committed to helping the Lionesses succeed in the UEFA Women’s Nations League and the upcoming Euros. England will face the Netherlands in the group stages on July 9, 2025, a match that will serve as a precursor to Veurink’s new role.

The FA has acknowledged Veurink’s significant contributions to the Lionesses and expressed gratitude for his dedication. His departure will undoubtedly be felt, but the opportunity for him to lead his home country is seen as a fitting next step in his career.
