Enugu Air Sets Sights on Global Routes After Official Launch

Enugu, Nigeria – July 8, 2025 — The newly unveiled Enugu Air has announced plans to expand its operations beyond Nigeria’s borders to key international destinations including the United Kingdom, United States, China, Europe, and other African countries. The ambitious plan was revealed by Enugu State Governor, Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, during the formal commissioning of the airline held at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu.

Speaking at the event, Governor Mbah described the launch of Enugu Air as a strategic move aimed at boosting the state’s economic development, attracting investment, and creating thousands of direct and indirect jobs. According to him, the state government has already procured four aircraft and committed approximately ₦41 billion to the project.

Enugu Air, which is operated in partnership with XEJet, has begun operations with three Embraer aircraft and will commence flight services on the Enugu–Abuja–Lagos route. The airline is also seeking regulatory approvals to expand its domestic coverage to Port Harcourt, Owerri, Benin, and Kano, among other cities.

The second phase of the airline’s development, the governor stated, will see its reach extend across African nations and eventually to major international hubs in Europe, Asia, and North America. He stressed that the state’s long-term vision is to establish Enugu as a leading aviation hub in West Africa, enabling smoother connectivity for business, tourism, and the Nigerian diaspora.

Also speaking at the occasion, Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, commended the Enugu State Government for the bold initiative. He noted that the federal government will support the project by facilitating access to funding, expediting regulatory approvals, and enhancing infrastructure at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport.

The minister also announced the opening of a new regional office of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) in Enugu to improve oversight and regulatory support for the airline and other aviation stakeholders in the region.

The launch of Enugu Air marks a new chapter in Nigeria’s aviation sector, coming at a time when regional and international connectivity is critical for economic growth. With a phased expansion plan and strong government backing, the airline aims to redefine air travel originating from southeastern Nigeria and position Enugu on the global aviation map.
