The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has inaugurated an Inter-Agency Market Monitoring Taskforce aimed at combating the proliferation of counterfeit products in Nigeria’s markets and ensuring the safety of consumers.
Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, the Executive Vice Chairman of the FCCPC, Babatunde Irukera, stated that the Taskforce will work collaboratively with other regulatory bodies, including NAFDAC, SON, and security agencies, to identify, intercept, and eliminate fake, substandard, and dangerous goods across the country.
According to Irukera, the initiative is part of broader efforts to promote fair trade practices, protect consumer rights, and maintain the integrity of the Nigerian market. He stressed that the presence of counterfeit and unsafe products undermines public health, endangers lives, and erodes consumer trust.
The Taskforce will begin operations with surveillance activities in major commercial hubs, focusing on sectors with high incidents of counterfeit goods such as pharmaceuticals, electronics, and food products.
The FCCPC called on the public to cooperate with the team and report suspicious goods or activities. The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to consumer protection and a safer, more transparent marketplace.
