The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, has called on residents to adhere strictly to traffic regulations while warning against any form of aggression towards law enforcement officers. This appeal comes amidst ongoing efforts to enforce road safety and ensure the protection of all road users in Abuja.
Disu emphasized the importance of compliance with traffic laws, particularly the mandatory Third-Party Motor Vehicle Insurance policy introduced earlier this year. The policy requires all vehicle owners in the FCT to possess valid insurance coverage to safeguard against financial losses resulting from accidents. The enforcement exercise, which began on February 1, 2025, is part of a broader initiative by the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, aimed at enhancing road safety nationwide.
The Commissioner reiterated that officers involved in enforcement duties have been instructed to maintain professionalism and courtesy while carrying out their responsibilities. He assured the public that no form of harassment or extortion would be tolerated, urging motorists to cooperate fully with law enforcement personnel. Disu further warned that non-compliance with traffic laws would attract strict penalties.
In addition to promoting adherence to regulations, Disu expressed concern over recent incidents where officers were attacked during their duties. He cautioned residents against such actions, stressing that law enforcement officers are working tirelessly to ensure public safety and deserve respect and cooperation from citizens.
The FCT Police Command remains committed to fostering a safe environment for all residents through proactive measures and community engagement. Disu encouraged vehicle owners to install digital tracking devices in their cars as a precautionary measure against theft and to aid swift recovery during investigations.
