FCT Minister Wike Clarifies Abuja City Wall Project, Says Concept Inspired by Dubai

August 5, 2025 — The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Nyesom Wike, has shed light on the proposed Abuja City Wall project, explaining that the concept was inspired by the iconic urban designs seen in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Speaking during an official press briefing in Abuja on Monday, Wike stated that the initiative is not merely a decorative structure, but a visionary infrastructure project aimed at redefining Abuja’s urban identity and enhancing its global competitiveness. According to him, the idea is to transform Nigeria’s capital city into a modern metropolis with unique landmarks that reflect both cultural heritage and forward-looking development.

“The Abuja City Wall project is not a random construction plan. It is a strategic beautification and security-enhancing initiative patterned after the successful city wall designs in Dubai and other leading global cities,” the minister said. “It will serve as both an architectural masterpiece and a symbol of national pride.”

Wike explained that the wall will span designated urban corridors in the capital, offering integrated pedestrian-friendly walkways, surveillance systems, and climate-responsive landscaping. He noted that although critics have raised concerns over the necessity of the project, the city wall represents a broader plan to boost tourism, urban aesthetics, and environmental sustainability in line with Abuja’s 2050 Smart City Vision.

He added that preliminary consultations have been conducted with international urban designers and engineers, while local artisans and professionals will be engaged during the construction phase to boost employment and economic activity.

Addressing concerns about funding priorities, Wike assured residents that the project would not divert resources from essential services. “We have made provisions to ensure that our health, education, and infrastructure commitments remain intact. The city wall project will be executed transparently and with public interest at the core,” he affirmed.

The minister concluded by urging residents to support the long-term transformation of Abuja into a world-class city, adding that detailed project designs and timelines would be unveiled after final environmental and architectural reviews are completed.
