Abuja, July 11, 2025 — Senator Ireti Kingibe, representing the Federal Capital Territory, has affirmed her commitment to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), following her alignment with the opposition coalition after leaving the Labour Party (LP).
In an appearance on Channels Television’s Political Paradigm on Tuesday, Kingibe expressed concerns over deep-seated divisions within the LP, stating that the party in its current state is “fractured and broken” and lacks the cohesion necessary to win elections in 2027. As a result, she says, switching to the ADC became a strategic move.
The Labour Party … was broken. There are two factions of the Labour Party right now … ADC has credible candidates, and it is that platform we are going to use to show them,” she told viewers .
While she remained a Labour Party member at the time, Senator Kingibe made it clear her allegiance now lies with the ADC, and hinted at the possibility of formally leaving LP if internal strife continues.
Having delivered a surprising victory in the FCT Senate race, she emphasized that ADC provides a stronger platform for grassroots engagement and electoral success ahead of the upcoming local government and general elections.
Her move underscores growing pressures within Nigeria’s opposition parties and highlights the strategic recalibrations among key political figures in the lead-up to 2027.
