FEC Puts Education Expansion on Pause, Orders 7-Year Freeze on New Federal Universities, Polytechnics, and Colleges

Abuja, Nigeria — August 13, 2025 | The Federal Executive Council (FEC), chaired by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has imposed a seven-year halt on establishing new federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education across Nigeria.

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, disclosed the decision, stressing that the move aims to stop the unchecked proliferation of federal tertiary institutions, which the government says has strained resources and weakened academic standards.

Under the new policy, the federal government will redirect its focus from expanding the network of institutions to strengthening the quality of existing ones. Plans include upgrading infrastructure, improving academic facilities, and addressing the shortage of qualified personnel in the education sector.

The government believes this freeze will enable more targeted funding, foster better learning conditions, and enhance oversight, ultimately raising the standards of Nigeria’s higher education system.
