The Federal Ministry of Education has officially acknowledged the appointment of Professor Carol Chinyelugo Arinze-Umobi as the Acting Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, effective from Monday, 19th May 2025. The announcement comes after a notification from the institution’s management indicating that her selection followed the proper statutory procedure.
According to the Ministry, Professor Arinze-Umobi’s emergence aligns with the stipulations of Section 5(13) of the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Amendment) Act, 2003. Her nomination by the University Senate and subsequent ratification by the Governing Council are in keeping with the legal framework guiding transitional leadership in federal universities. The Ministry expressed satisfaction that due process was followed throughout the selection process.
Professor Arinze-Umobi, a seasoned academic and administrator, is expected to take charge of the day-to-day operations of the university, ensuring stability in academic and administrative affairs during this interim period. Her leadership will cover a maximum period of six months or until a substantive Vice-Chancellor is duly appointed, in line with Section 5(14) of the same Act.
The Ministry described her appointment as a clear demonstration of institutional compliance with governance standards, while also expressing confidence in her ability to steer the university through this period of transition with competence and integrity.
Reaffirming its commitment to transparency, institutional autonomy, and merit-based leadership in the management of Nigeria’s tertiary education system, the Federal Ministry of Education noted that it would continue to support universities in implementing sound administrative practices.
