Lagos, Nigeria | September 19, 2025
The Federal Fire Service has announced a nationwide fire safety compliance audit following the deadly blaze at Afriland Towers on Lagos Island that has now claimed ten lives.
The fire, which broke out in the basement inverter room of the six-storey commercial building around 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 16, initially left four staff of the Federal Inland Revenue Service dead.
By Thursday, six more fatalities were confirmed among employees of United Capital Plc, whose offices occupied the third and fourth floors.
In a statement, the Service’s spokesman, Paul Abraham, disclosed that Controller-General Samuel Olumode has directed comprehensive checks on public and private buildings nationwide.
The exercise will enforce compliance with fire safety standards, sanction defaulting facilities, and provide training for managers and staff to strengthen preparedness against future disasters.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, as families, colleagues, and officials mourn the victims of one of Lagos’s most tragic recent workplace fires.
