Nigeria Advances Bid to Host 2030 Commonwealth Games

Abuja, Nigeria | September 19, 2025

Nigeria on Thursday welcomed the Commonwealth Sport Bid Evaluation Committee to Abuja, marking a significant step in the country’s efforts to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games.

President Bola Tinubu, represented by his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, formally received the delegation at the Presidential Villa. He reaffirmed Nigeria’s readiness and commitment to staging an inclusive, diverse, and world-class Games, pledging full government support to the bid process.

Officials disclosed that Nigeria has submitted all required documents, including a Letter of Guarantee, as part of its proposal to host the multi-sport event.

The visit by the evaluation committee forms part of the assessment process ahead of the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in November, when a final decision on the host nation will be announced.

If successful, the 2030 Games would be the first time the Commonwealth Games are held on African soil, a milestone Nigerian authorities say will highlight the continent’s growing role in international sports.
