Federal Fire Service Unveils Bold Mental Health Drive to Support Officers Nationwide

In a landmark move to prioritise the wellbeing of its personnel, the Federal Fire Service (FFS) has announced the launch of a nationwide mental health initiative aimed at supporting the psychological resilience and emotional health of its officers.

The initiative, which is the first of its kind in the history of the agency, is designed to address the growing mental health challenges faced by fire service personnel, who are often exposed to high-stress and traumatic situations in the line of duty.

According to the FFS, the programme will include regular mental health screenings, counselling sessions, peer support networks, and stress management training. The agency is also partnering with mental health professionals and institutions to deliver expert-led workshops across all its zonal and state commands.

Speaking on the initiative, the Controller General of the Federal Fire Service, Abdulganiyu Jaji, emphasised the importance of mental wellness in the overall efficiency and performance of fire officers.

“Our officers are often the first responders during emergencies, risking their lives to save others. It is imperative that we support their mental wellbeing just as much as their physical health. A mentally fit officer is a better responder, a better team player, and a more effective public servant,” he stated.

The FFS leadership noted that the programme is also in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises the welfare and productivity of public servants.

The rollout of the initiative is expected to begin in July 2025, with an initial pilot in Abuja and subsequent expansion to all 36 states and the FCT.

Stakeholders in the emergency services sector have commended the move, describing it as timely and necessary for improving the morale and operational effectiveness of fire personnel across the country.
