Federal Government Begins Verification of Disputed Oil and Gas Fields in Niger Delta

Okpai, Delta State | September 22, 2025

The Federal Government has commenced the verification of disputed and newly drilled oil and gas fields in the Niger Delta to address boundary concerns and ensure equitable revenue allocation.

Chairman of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), Dr. Mohammed Shehu, led the commission’s team on an inspection visit to the Aneize oil field in Okpai, Delta State. He explained that the exercise became necessary following petitions from several oil-producing states over ownership of specific fields and wells.

According to Shehu, an Inter-Agency Technical Committee has been inaugurated to carry out the verification.

The committee comprises representatives of RMAFC, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), the Office of the Surveyor General of the Federation (OSGOF), and the National Boundary Commission (NBC).

The task of the committee is to identify and map oil and gas fields and wells within disputed areas, including those drilled since 2017.

Fields under review include Aneize within Oil Mining Lease (OML) 143, Eyine, and Ameshi.

Shehu stated that the verification exercise is part of ongoing efforts to provide accurate data for determining the 13 per cent derivation benefits to oil-producing states and to promote fairness in revenue sharing.
