In a significant move to enhance transparency and fairness in the recruitment process, the Federal Government of Nigeria has instructed all federal tertiary institutions to publicly advertise available job vacancies.
This directive, issued by the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, requires institutions to publish these vacancies in at least one national daily newspaper, on their official websites, and in relevant academic and professional journals. This initiative aims to ensure that all eligible Nigerians have equal opportunities to apply for positions, thereby curbing secretive employment practices that have long plagued the sector.
The decision follows the granting of waivers to these institutions based on their specific manpower needs, which were submitted to the Ministry for review. By promoting a transparent and competitive recruitment process, the government seeks to build capacity across higher education institutions and foster a culture of integrity and fairness.
Institutions are also reminded to submit their recruitment needs to the Ministry for proper review by the Committee on Waiver and Recruitment. The Ministry has emphasized its commitment to enforcing compliance, warning that sanctions will be imposed on any institution that fails to adhere to this directive.
This move is part of a broader effort by the Ministry to enhance the efficiency and autonomy of tertiary institutions. Recently, the Federal Executive Council exempted public tertiary institutions from the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), allowing them greater control over recruitment and staff management.
This exemption is expected to streamline administrative processes and improve the overall management of these institutions. By promoting transparency and fairness in recruitment, the government is taking a crucial step towards strengthening the Nigerian higher education system and ensuring that it remains inclusive and competitive.
