In a solemn but compassionate gesture, the Federal Government has disbursed ₦1 million each to the families of 22 young Nigerian athletes who lost their lives in a tragic road accident earlier this year. The move is aimed at providing immediate financial relief to the grieving families and recognising the contributions of the late athletes to the nation’s sporting dreams.
The cheque presentation, held under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Sports Development, drew tears and heartfelt emotions from relatives and stakeholders in the sports community. The deceased athletes, many of whom were on their way to a national sporting event, were regarded as promising talents in various disciplines before their lives were cut short.
Speaking during the event, Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Enoh, said the Federal Government was committed to supporting Nigerian athletes and honouring the memories of those who paid the ultimate price in service to the nation. “This tragedy shook the entire nation, and while no amount of money can truly compensate for the lives lost, this gesture reflects our government’s sympathy and recognition,” he said.
The Minister also promised that investigations into the circumstances surrounding the road mishap are ongoing, with emphasis on improving transport safety standards for athletes traveling to and from sporting engagements. He assured that the government will work closely with sports federations to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
Family members of the deceased expressed gratitude for the gesture, noting that the support—both emotional and financial—was a welcome sign that their loss had not gone unnoticed by the Nigerian government.
The athletes had been en route to a competition when their vehicle was involved in a fatal accident that claimed all 22 lives. The tragic incident reignited calls for enhanced logistics, better welfare, and comprehensive insurance cover for athletes representing Nigeria.
This intervention adds to a series of recent actions by the Federal Government aimed at uplifting the welfare of sportsmen and women across the country, and ensuring that those who wear the national colours are treated with dignity, whether in life or in death.
