Federal Government Halts Implementation of Doctors’ Allowance Circulars Pending Further Dialogue

The Federal Government has put a temporary hold on the implementation of recently issued circulars concerning doctors’ allowances, citing the need for broader consultations with relevant stakeholders in the health sector. The decision, which comes amid growing tension within the medical community, was confirmed by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, which stated that the suspension is to allow room for further engagement and clarity on the matter.

The circulars, which had outlined adjustments to specific categories of allowances for medical and dental practitioners in government service, sparked concern among doctors’ unions, with many viewing the changes as unclear and potentially disadvantageous. In response, several professional bodies, including the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), had raised objections and requested immediate withdrawal or suspension until proper consultations were held.

Reacting to the growing discontent, the government assured medical professionals that it remains committed to fair and transparent dialogue that will lead to mutually agreeable outcomes. Officials explained that the decision to suspend the circulars reflects the administration’s willingness to prioritize stakeholder input and avoid policies that may disrupt industrial harmony in the health sector.

According to sources within the ministry, meetings with key representatives of the medical profession have already commenced, and more comprehensive talks are expected to follow in the coming weeks. The aim, they said, is to review the allowances in a way that acknowledges the vital role of medical workers while aligning with fiscal realities and public service reforms.

The suspended circulars were initially part of ongoing efforts to restructure remuneration across the public health system, a move the government argues is necessary to ensure sustainability and equity. However, the sensitive nature of healthcare delivery and the long-standing agitation for improved welfare among doctors have made such reforms a delicate process requiring careful handling.

As the suspension takes effect, medical professionals have urged the government to ensure that future policies reflect not only economic considerations but also the working conditions and morale of frontline health workers. The Federal Government, on its part, has reaffirmed its commitment to engaging constructively with all parties to maintain industrial peace and strengthen the nation’s health system.
