Federal Government Partners WHO to Support Drug Users with Healthier Lifestyle through Harm Reduction Programme

In a significant step towards tackling substance abuse and promoting public health, the Federal Government of Nigeria, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), has intensified efforts to assist drug users in transitioning towards healthier and more productive lifestyles. The initiative adopts the Harm Reduction Approach, a globally recognized strategy aimed at minimizing the negative health, social, and legal impacts associated with drug use without necessarily requiring users to immediately abstain.

The programme, which is being rolled out across key regions with high incidences of drug dependence, focuses on providing evidence-based interventions such as access to counseling, provision of clean syringes, opioid substitution therapy, and comprehensive healthcare services. According to health experts, harm reduction not only saves lives but also integrates drug users into the broader healthcare system, reducing stigma and promoting rehabilitation.

Officials from the Federal Ministry of Health have reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to aligning with international best practices in public health, noting that the partnership with WHO will provide technical support, training, and resources to expand the reach and effectiveness of the programme.

Public health advocates have lauded the initiative, stressing that addressing drug addiction through harm reduction rather than criminalization will ultimately improve health outcomes, reduce the spread of infectious diseases such as HIV and Hepatitis C, and contribute to social stability.

The government has expressed optimism that with sustained effort and community support, many individuals struggling with substance use will find a pathway back to health, dignity, and full societal participation.
