FG Begins Nationwide Distribution of N2.9bn Maternal, Neonatal Health Commodities

Abuja, Nigeria | September 9, 2025 — The Federal Government has commenced the nationwide distribution of maternal and neonatal health commodities worth ₦2.9 billion, in a move aimed at reducing maternal and child mortality across the country.

The Ministry of Health disclosed that the intervention covers essential drugs, medical consumables, and lifesaving equipment to strengthen maternal and newborn healthcare services in hospitals and primary health centres. According to officials, the initiative is part of ongoing efforts to bridge supply gaps, improve healthcare delivery, and ensure that vulnerable women and infants receive timely and adequate care.

Government authorities emphasized that the distribution is designed to target states with high maternal and child mortality rates, while also ensuring accountability and transparency in the process. The commodities are expected to improve emergency obstetric care, safe delivery, and neonatal survival, especially in rural and underserved communities.

Health experts have commended the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention that could significantly lower Nigeria’s troubling maternal mortality rate, which remains among the highest globally.

The Federal Government assured that monitoring mechanisms would be put in place to ensure that the items reach the intended beneficiaries and contribute meaningfully to the country’s broader goal of achieving universal health coverage.
