KANO — In a move to bolster Nigeria’s cybersecurity capacity and foster innovation in digital security, the Federal Government has commissioned a state-of-the-art Cybersecurity Centre at Bayero University, Kano (BUK).
The facility, which was officially handed over on Monday, represents a strategic investment in research, training, and national cyber defense capabilities. The centre is designed to support the development of homegrown solutions to emerging digital threats while equipping students and professionals with world-class cybersecurity skills.
Speaking during the commissioning, representatives of the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy hailed the initiative as a key milestone in Nigeria’s journey toward a secure and resilient digital ecosystem.
“This centre will serve as a hub for knowledge exchange, policy development, and practical training for the next generation of cybersecurity professionals in Nigeria,” the ministry noted.
The Vice Chancellor of BUK, Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, commended the Federal Government for its commitment to education and digital development, stating that the facility would enhance the university’s capacity to produce globally competitive graduates in cyber-related fields.
The centre is equipped with cutting-edge technologies including threat analysis labs, digital forensics suites, secure testing environments, and AI-powered defense simulation systems.
Security experts and stakeholders in attendance emphasized the urgent need for collaborative efforts between academia, government, and the private sector in combating rising cyber threats, particularly in critical national infrastructure, financial systems, and electoral technologies.
The commissioning aligns with the Federal Government’s National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy (NDEPS), which prioritizes cybersecurity as a pillar for sustainable digital growth and public trust.
