FG Commits to New Water, Sanitation, Irrigation, and Hydropower Projects to Fast-Track SDG-6 Goals

Abuja, Nigeria | September 18, 2025

The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to achieving Sustainable Development Goal Six (SDG-6) by rolling out new projects in water supply, sanitation, irrigation, and hydropower across the country.

Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, disclosed this in Abuja on Thursday while presenting the ministry’s strategic roadmap for 2025–2030. He explained that the projects will focus on expanding access to clean drinking water, ending open defecation, boosting food production through irrigation, and harnessing renewable energy from hydropower sources.

According to Utsev, the initiative is designed to close existing infrastructure gaps and fast-track Nigeria’s progress towards universal access to safe water and sanitation by 2030. He stressed that the government is determined to meet global targets despite financial and logistical challenges.

“Water is life, and sanitation is dignity. Our commitment is to ensure that every Nigerian, regardless of location, has access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation facilities. Beyond that, irrigation and hydropower projects will support food security and renewable energy supply for economic growth,” he said.

The minister further noted that the government will deepen partnerships with state governments, development agencies, and the private sector to mobilise resources and expertise needed for implementation.

Nigeria has in recent years struggled with rising cases of waterborne diseases, low sanitation coverage in rural areas, and declining agricultural productivity due to inadequate irrigation. Experts say the new initiative, if sustained, could significantly improve public health, strengthen food systems, and contribute to climate resilience.

Stakeholders in the water and sanitation sector welcomed the announcement, describing it as a bold step toward ensuring sustainable development and improved quality of life for millions of Nigerians.
