The Federal Government has announced the disbursement of ₦330 billion to vulnerable households across the country under its social protection programme.
The initiative, coordinated through the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, is part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which seeks to cushion the impact of economic hardship and tackle rising poverty levels.
Speaking in Abuja on Thursday, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, said the programme had directly reached millions of Nigerians with cash transfers and other targeted support packages. She noted that the funds were disbursed through verified bank accounts and digital platforms to ensure transparency and accountability.
“This intervention is designed to reduce the pressure on vulnerable households, enhance food security, and prevent more Nigerians from sliding into extreme poverty. The government is committed to expanding the programme to cover more beneficiaries in the coming months,” Edu stated.
Officials confirmed that the programme prioritised women, children, and persons with disabilities, particularly in rural communities where the effects of inflation and unemployment remain most severe.
Analysts say the intervention comes at a critical time as many Nigerians struggle with the rising cost of living. The National Bureau of Statistics recently reported a drop in inflation from 21.88% in July to 20.12% in August, but prices of essential goods remain relatively high.
The government added that it will continue to collaborate with development partners and state governments to strengthen the programme and ensure it delivers lasting impact.
