FG Disclaims Controversial Textbook, Vows to Tackle Distorted Yoruba History Content

The Federal Ministry of Education has disassociated itself from a controversial history textbook that allegedly contains misleading claims about the founding of Ile-Ife, a city central to Yoruba heritage. The disclaimer comes in response to a petition by the Concerned Citizens of Yoruba Origin and Supporters of Truth, led by Otunba Abayomi Odunowo.

The textbook, authored by Tony and Ijeoma Duru and published by Tones Publishers, has been criticized for historical inaccuracies and for allegedly promoting ethnic distortion. The Ministry clarified that it neither authored, approved, nor endorsed the publication and emphasized that it is not included in the list of instructional materials sanctioned for public schools.

In a statement signed by Boriowo Folasade, Director of Press and Public Relations, the Ministry appreciated the vigilance of stakeholders and expressed concern over the textbook’s potential to misinform learners and incite ethnic tensions.

Reaffirming its commitment to culturally respectful education, the Ministry announced plans to collaborate with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and other relevant agencies to investigate and address the issue.

“All necessary steps will be taken to ensure a fair and timely resolution that respects historical truth and promotes unity,” the statement read.
