FG Expands Technical Education Curriculum with 26 New Trade Areas, Including Solar Tech, Plumbing, and Agriculture

Abuja | September 12, 2025 — The Federal Government has announced the inclusion of 26 new trade areas in the national technical education curriculum, a move aimed at equipping Nigerian youths with industry-relevant skills to meet modern workforce demands.

The update, unveiled by the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) in Abuja, reflects government efforts to align vocational education with global trends and Nigeria’s developmental priorities. The newly introduced trades cover diverse fields such as solar technology, hardware repair, plumbing, agriculture, and other emerging skill areas critical to the nation’s economic growth.

Registrar of NABTEB, Prof. Ifeoma Isiugo-Abanihe, explained that the revised syllabi were designed in partnership with industry experts to ensure learners are trained to meet real-world challenges. She noted that the initiative would boost employability, entrepreneurship, and technical capacity among young Nigerians.

Education analysts have commended the reform, saying it underscores Nigeria’s shift from overdependence on white-collar jobs to technical and vocational careers that can reduce unemployment and strengthen small- and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs).

The Federal Government assured that technical colleges across the country will begin rolling out the updated curriculum from the next academic session, with teachers receiving specialized training to handle the new courses.
