FG, Huawei Discuss Tech-Driven Solutions to Nigeria’s Security Challenges

BEIJING, CHINA — In a strategic push to deepen Nigeria’s digital security infrastructure, the Federal Government has initiated high-level discussions with Chinese tech giant, Huawei Technologies Limited, on leveraging advanced technologies to address the country’s security concerns.

Leading the delegation to Huawei’s global headquarters in China, the Honourable Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, underscored the government’s commitment to adopting cutting-edge technological solutions in safeguarding national security. The visit, which took place last week, brought together key Nigerian officials and top executives of Huawei Technologies to explore avenues of collaboration in digital surveillance, data intelligence, and smart border control.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo was accompanied by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, and the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Mrs. Kemi Nanna Nandap. The Nigerian delegation held extensive discussions with Mr. Wind Li, CEO of Huawei’s Global and Public Sector unit, focusing on how digital innovations can help Nigeria strengthen its internal security and immigration systems.

“We are at a point in our national journey where the adoption of technology is not just desirable but imperative. Technology remains a critical enabler in enhancing national security, and Huawei has shown capacity in deploying smart solutions globally. Our visit here is about building trust and exploring synergies for a safer and smarter Nigeria,” Tunji-Ojo said.

The talks centred on deploying Artificial Intelligence (AI) for predictive analysis, biometric identification systems, smart surveillance architecture, and secure data management—particularly at Nigeria’s borders and entry points. Huawei, a global leader in ICT infrastructure and smart city development, reaffirmed its readiness to support Nigeria with tailor-made solutions.

In recent years, the Nigerian government has prioritized digital transformation in governance, especially in security and immigration services. This move aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which emphasises technology-driven reform across key sectors.

Huawei has a longstanding presence in Nigeria, with several collaborations in ICT infrastructure development, training of tech talents, and support for digital inclusion across the country. The renewed engagement signals a step forward in operationalising security-tech partnerships to address terrorism, trans-border crimes, and cyber threats more effectively.

Stakeholders expect that the outcome of the engagement will soon reflect in the deployment of intelligent surveillance systems and enhanced digital tools for the Nigeria Immigration Service and other relevant security agencies.
