Abuja, August 11, 2025
The Federal Government of Nigeria has unveiled a strategic programme aimed at strengthening health governance and steering the country towards self-reliant financing of essential health services. The initiative, launched on Monday in Abuja, seeks to enhance sustainability, accountability, and efficiency within the health sector.
At the launch event, Health Minister Dr. Amina Yusuf highlighted that the programme is designed to reduce Nigeria’s dependence on donor funding by mobilising domestic resources and improving financial management across federal, state, and local health institutions. She emphasised the need for coordinated efforts to build resilient health systems capable of delivering quality services to all Nigerians.
The transition framework includes measures such as improving budgetary allocations for health, adopting innovative financing mechanisms, and strengthening regulatory oversight. It also focuses on capacity building for health administrators and fostering partnerships with private sector stakeholders to complement public health funding.
Officials noted that the move aligns with global health development goals and Nigeria’s commitment to achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by 2030. The government pledged to monitor progress closely and engage with all relevant stakeholders to ensure successful implementation.
