The Federal Government is set to embark on the rehabilitation of the ageing Carter Bridge in Lagos, following structural concerns raised by engineers. The Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, disclosed this during an inspection tour of the facility on Monday, July 7, 2025.
Accompanied by a team of ministry engineers and technical personnel, Umahi stated that the preliminary assessments conducted on the bridge revealed worrying signs of structural fatigue that demand immediate attention to avert potential hazards.
“The Carter Bridge is one of the critical infrastructural assets in Lagos. Our engineers have flagged some areas that require urgent intervention. We are not taking any chances,” the Minister declared.
He assured Lagos residents that the government would prioritise safety and ensure minimal disruption to traffic flow during the proposed rehabilitation process.
According to Umahi, the Federal Ministry of Works is currently compiling technical reports and cost assessments, after which a proposal will be submitted for executive approval and funding.
Built in the early 20th century, Carter Bridge connects Lagos Island to the mainland and has been a major transit route for decades. However, years of heavy vehicular use and limited maintenance have taken a toll on the structure.
Umahi further emphasized that the bridge’s integrity must be preserved not just for today’s use, but for future generations. He reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to maintaining public infrastructure nationwide.
Residents and motorists have long called for a revamp of the bridge due to visible signs of wear, including vibrations and weakening joints during peak traffic hours.
