FG, NANS Forge New Partnership to Address Students’ Welfare and Disability Inclusion

Abuja, Nigeria June 18, 2025 —

In a bid to advance student welfare and deepen inclusive education across Nigeria, the Honourable Minister of State for Education, Dr. Yusuf Tanko Sununu, has expressed the Federal Government’s readiness to partner with the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) on key social initiatives affecting students nationwide.

The minister made this known during a strategic meeting with a delegation of NANS leadership in Abuja, where issues bordering on the welfare of students and the urgent need for policy support for students with disabilities took centre stage.

Dr. Sununu commended the student body for presenting a well-thought-out blueprint focused on students with disabilities, describing it as a timely and progressive document. He assured them of government’s commitment to creating a more inclusive and student-friendly academic environment.

“As a ministry, we recognise that education must be inclusive and supportive. The proposal by NANS aligns with our broader goal to ensure that no Nigerian student is left behind,” the minister said.

To give effect to the proposed initiatives, Dr. Sununu announced the establishment of a joint working committee that will assess areas of collaboration between the ministry and the student body. The committee is expected to design implementable programmes that will address the social needs of students, including accessibility, mental health, and academic support.

Leaders of NANS expressed optimism over the partnership, noting that it marks a significant milestone in student-government engagement. They reiterated their commitment to working constructively with relevant authorities to improve the lives of Nigerian students across all levels.

The meeting is part of ongoing consultations aimed at strengthening student-focused policy frameworks, particularly in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the current administration.
