FG Pegs 12 Years as Minimum Age for JSS1 Entry Nationwide

Abuja, July 25, 2025 – The Federal Government has officially set twelve years as the minimum age requirement for admission into Junior Secondary School 1 (JSS1) across Nigeria. This policy shift is aimed at aligning the nation’s educational system with global standards and promoting age-appropriate learning at the foundational level.

Announcing the decision, the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, disclosed that the new directive followed recommendations by key stakeholders in the education sector and was approved after extensive consultations. According to him, the new age benchmark is expected to take effect from the next academic session.

“We have observed with concern the increasing number of underage children gaining admission into junior secondary schools. This not only affects their ability to cope academically but also creates unnecessary pressure on their emotional and psychological development,” the Minister stated.

Prof. Mamman emphasized that the policy would be strictly enforced in all government-owned and private schools nationwide. He added that parents and school administrators must comply with the directive, warning that erring institutions risk sanctions, including possible withdrawal of operational licenses.

The Minister noted that the decision supports the ongoing reforms aimed at enhancing the quality of education delivery in Nigeria and ensuring that pupils complete their six years of primary education before transitioning to the junior secondary level.

Education experts have commended the move, describing it as a step in the right direction towards nurturing well-rounded learners and reducing dropout rates caused by academic stress among underage students.

With this development, the Federal Government aims to standardize basic education and uphold the integrity of Nigeria’s 9-3-4 education structure while fostering an inclusive and developmentally suitable learning environment for all pupils.
