FG Reaffirms Ambition to Boost Crude Output from 1.745 m to 2 Million bpd by Year-End

Abuja, July 2, 2025 — The Federal Government says Nigeria’s current crude oil production stands at approximately 1.745 million barrels per day (bpd) and has confirmed its commitment to raising output to 2 million bpd by the end of 2025.

Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), announced the figures at the inauguration of Nigeria’s 2025 Oil & Gas (NOG) Energy Week in Abuja. He reminded stakeholders that the 2025 federal budget was predicated on achieving an average daily production of 2.06 million bpd and urged the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC Ltd.) to intensify efforts toward that goal .

Lokpobiri credited a renewed influx of investment into the oil industry to recent reforms and supportive legal frameworks. He said the resurgence of investor confidence since 2023 has reversed a decade-long stagnation in the sector, strengthening Nigeria’s positioning among global producers.

Addressing the National Assembly, the minister cautioned against frequent “frivolous” summonses of oil industry executives, practices he argues could discourage foreign participation and destabilize the sector’s progress  .

Despite this optimism, data from the Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) indicate recent output softness: average production, including condensates, fell to around 1.66 million bpd in May, with pure crude output averaging 1.45 million bpd. However, this sector remains within the OPEC production quota range.
