FG Releases N5.12 Billion to Settle Pension Arrears for Over 90,000 DBS Retirees

Abuja, August 11, 2025

The Federal Government has disbursed N5.12 billion to clear pension arrears owed to 90,689 retirees under the Defined Benefit Scheme (DBS), marking a significant step in addressing delayed pension payments across the public service.

The disbursement, facilitated by the National Pension Commission (PenCom), was announced in Abuja, highlighting the government’s resolve to improve pensioners’ welfare and uphold timely payment commitments. Dr. Aisha Mustapha, PenCom’s Executive Secretary, noted that the payment covers outstanding benefits that had accumulated over previous years, bringing much-needed financial relief to affected retirees.

Dr. Mustapha added that PenCom continues to implement enhanced technology and streamlined processes to ensure efficiency and transparency in pension administration. The commission is also intensifying efforts to eliminate future backlog and improve service delivery to pensioners nationwide.

This release forms part of the broader pension reform agenda aimed at fostering confidence in the pension system, promoting social security, and supporting the livelihoods of retired public officers. The Federal Government called for continued collaboration with stakeholders to sustain these gains and further strengthen the pension framework.
