FG Revokes 1,263 Mineral Licences, Defaulters Referred to EFCC

Abuja, Nigeria | September 22, 2025

The Federal Government has revoked 1,263 mineral licences belonging to operators who failed to comply with Nigeria’s mining regulations, warning that defaulters will face prosecution by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, made the announcement on Sunday in Abuja, stating that the action followed months of audits and compliance checks by the ministry. He explained that the licences were withdrawn from companies and individuals who defaulted in payment of statutory fees, abandoned their sites, or engaged in illegal mining activities.

“The Nigerian mining sector cannot thrive in a climate of impunity and disregard for due process. Holders of licences who refuse to comply with the law are sabotaging the nation’s economy and will not be spared,” Alake said.

He disclosed that the revoked licences cut across exploration, quarrying, and mining permits, adding that enforcement has been handed over to security agencies and the EFCC to ensure prosecution of offenders.

According to him, the ministry has introduced a strict compliance monitoring framework to sanitize the sector, encourage serious investors, and block revenue leakages. He further revealed that fresh licences would be reallocated to credible operators through a transparent bidding process.

Dr. Alake reaffirmed that the Federal Government is determined to reposition solid minerals as Nigeria’s next growth frontier, in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which identifies mining as a key driver of economic diversification.

Stakeholders have welcomed the move, though some have urged the government to strike a balance between enforcement and supporting genuine investors who may be struggling with infrastructure or financing challenges.
