FG Shuts Down Over 13 Million Social Media Accounts for Code Violations

Abuja, Nigeria — August 21, 2025

The Federal Government has deactivated about 13,597,057 social media accounts across platforms including TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter) for violating the 2024 Code of Practice for Interactive Computer Service Platforms.

The action was disclosed in the “2024 Compliance Report”, jointly prepared by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC). The report was submitted to government authorities by operators such as Google, Microsoft, and TikTok.

According to the report:

58,909,112 offensive content items were removed.

754,629 complaints were received from users.

420,439 content items were restored after successful appeals.

Hadiza Umar, Director of Corporate Communications at NITDA, confirmed the figures and said the measures were aimed at “ensuring safer online spaces, protecting users, and strengthening digital trust in Nigeria.”

The Federal Government noted that the enforcement reflects its determination to hold digital platforms accountable under Nigerian law. However, the full compliance report has not been made public, raising questions from digital rights advocates about transparency and potential implications for freedom of expression.
