FG Takes Fresh Steps to Revive Ajaokuta Steel Company

Abuja, Nigeria – June 14, 2025

The Federal Government on Friday announced new measures aimed at reviving the Ajaokuta Steel Company, one of Nigeria’s most strategic yet dormant industrial assets.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Steel Development, the government reaffirmed its commitment to restoring the facility to full operational capacity as part of a broader strategy to boost local manufacturing, create jobs, and reduce dependence on imports.

According to the statement, the new steps include engaging technical partners, revisiting earlier concession agreements, and securing investment from both local and international stakeholders.

“The Ajaokuta Steel Plant holds massive potential for Nigeria’s industrial future. Reviving it will be a major leap towards achieving our economic diversification goals,” the Minister of Steel Development said.

Located in Kogi State, the steel complex has remained inactive for decades despite several previous attempts at resuscitation. The latest efforts, the government says, will be anchored on transparency, accountability, and a clear roadmap for sustainability.

Industry experts and labour unions have welcomed the move, calling for swift action and proper oversight to ensure the long-awaited revival becomes a reality.
