FG to Enforce Vehicle Load, Height Limits on Bridges Nationwide

The Federal Government has announced plans to commence strict enforcement of vehicular load and clearance height regulations on bridges across Nigeria as part of efforts to safeguard national infrastructure and enhance road safety.

This directive, which was disclosed by the Federal Ministry of Works on Tuesday, aims to curb the growing incidents of bridge deterioration and damage caused by overloading and oversized vehicles, particularly articulated trucks and tankers.

According to the ministry, the enforcement will include routine weight checks, installation of clearance height barriers, and collaboration with relevant agencies such as the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Nigeria Police, and state traffic agencies to ensure compliance.

Authorities say several bridges across the country have suffered structural strain due to prolonged abuse by heavy-duty vehicles exceeding permissible weight limits. Such damage, if unchecked, poses a serious risk to lives and can lead to economic disruptions.

The Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, emphasized the urgency of protecting national assets, noting that most of the bridges were constructed decades ago and were not designed to carry the type of loads currently being placed on them.

He warned that defaulters found violating the clearance or weight restrictions would be prosecuted in line with existing laws. “We will not wait until a tragedy occurs before we act. Every driver, transporter, and logistics company must take responsibility,” Umahi stated.

The enforcement is expected to begin in phases, with major urban and interstate bridges prioritized, including those in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Onitsha, and Kano. Stakeholders have been urged to cooperate with officials and ensure their vehicles comply with national bridge safety standards.
