ABUJA — The Federal Government has announced plans to sell 753 housing units recently recovered from former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, as part of efforts to repurpose forfeited assets for public benefit.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arc. Ahmed Dangiwa, during a media briefing in Abuja on Tuesday. He confirmed that the properties—located in prime areas of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT)—were handed over to the ministry by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
“These assets were retrieved as part of ongoing corruption investigations. Our mandate is to ensure they are transparently disposed of and reintegrated into the national housing scheme,” Dangiwa stated.
The minister noted that the units would be sold to Nigerians under a public-private partnership arrangement, targeting civil servants, first-time homeowners, and other eligible citizens through a mortgage-backed system.
He also emphasized that the sales process would be open, competitive, and in line with due process regulations to prevent future abuse of recovered assets.
This development follows the EFCC’s broader drive to recover assets acquired through alleged financial misconduct, with the former CBN governor currently facing multiple charges related to mismanagement and abuse of office.
Stakeholders in the housing sector have welcomed the move as a step toward accountability and public sector reform, urging the government to ensure transparency in the allocation and sale of the units.
