The Federal Government has inaugurated a centralised passport production centre at the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) headquarters in Abuja, in what officials described as a historic breakthrough in Nigeria’s passport administration.
The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, disclosed this on Thursday during an inspection of the newly completed Centralised Passport Personalisation Centre. He said the initiative would significantly improve efficiency, transparency, and speed in delivering passport services nationwide.
“Since the establishment of the Nigeria Immigration Service in 1963, the country has never operated a single central passport production centre. Today, that has changed. The project is 100 per cent ready, and Nigeria can now be more productive and efficient in delivering passport services,” Tunji-Ojo said.
According to him, centralising the process will eliminate bottlenecks linked to multiple production centres, minimise delays in issuance, and further strengthen the security features of Nigerian travel documents.
The minister added that the project forms part of President Bola Tinubu’s wider reforms to modernise identity management and travel documentation systems, ensuring Nigerians at home and abroad can access passports more seamlessly.
Officials noted that with the launch of the centre, the NIS is now better positioned to meet growing demand and reduce complaints about backlogs and processing delays.
