In a bold move to tackle the nation’s housing deficit and promote sustainable development, the Federal Government has announced plans to utilize bamboo as a key material in the construction of affordable, smart housing units for low and medium-income earners across Nigeria. The initiative is part of an innovative strategy aimed at providing durable, cost-effective shelter solutions while harnessing locally available resources.
The disclosure was made by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, Mrs. Esuabana Nko Asanye, during a recent engagement on the ministry’s ongoing projects and policy direction. According to Mrs. Asanye, the decision to adopt bamboo stems from its abundance in Nigeria, its renewable nature, and its proven durability in construction when properly treated.
She emphasized that the project aligns with the federal government’s broader commitment to leveraging science, technology, and innovation to solve real-world challenges, including affordable housing. “Bamboo is not only environmentally friendly but also structurally strong. It offers a sustainable and low-cost alternative to traditional building materials like cement and steel, which have become increasingly expensive,” she stated.
Mrs. Asanye also noted that the use of bamboo would reduce construction costs, accelerate housing delivery, and support job creation, especially in rural communities where bamboo is cultivated. The government is working in collaboration with research institutions, private sector players, and international partners to ensure the success and scalability of the initiative.
This development comes at a time when millions of Nigerians, particularly in urban centers, are struggling with high rents and limited access to quality housing. The bamboo housing project is expected to serve as a model for eco-friendly urban development while improving living standards for under-served populations.
The Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology has reiterated its resolve to ensure that the bamboo housing scheme is implemented with strict adherence to safety and building standards, with smart technology integration aimed at enhancing energy efficiency and comfort.
This initiative marks a significant step toward achieving Nigeria’s housing goals and embracing green construction solutions that reflect global trends in sustainable urban development.
