Fire Erupts at UBA Mandilas Branch on Lagos Island

By: Saidat Adewale

A major fire is currently unfolding at the United Bank for Africa (UBA) Mandilas branch located on Broad Street, Lagos Island. The blaze reportedly began around 1:30 PM today, rapidly spreading through multiple floors of the six-storey building.
According to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the fire appears to have originated in the basement inverter room. Firefighters from nearby stations are actively battling the flames, while occupants of the building are being evacuated. Eyewitnesses report that staff and other occupants have largely escaped without injury.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, though preliminary reports suggest a possible electrical fault in the basement. Thick smoke has been seen billowing from the building, and the blaze has caused significant structural and property damage.
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has commended the swift response of emergency personnel and urged residents to avoid the area to facilitate safety operations. Authorities have also reassured the public that measures are being taken to prevent future incidents.
