In a bid to deepen tax compliance and modernize Nigeria’s revenue collection process, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has officially inaugurated the National E-Invoicing Solution Inter-Agency Steering Committee. The development was confirmed on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, through a statement shared on the official X (formerly Twitter) handle of the agency.
The inauguration, which took place at the FIRS headquarters in Abuja, marked a significant milestone in the rollout of the much-anticipated electronic invoicing system. According to the FIRS, the event included a comprehensive presentation detailing the strategic roadmap for the E-Invoicing Initiative, highlighting various implementation stages designed to ensure a smooth and effective adoption of the platform across key sectors.
The E-Invoicing solution, according to the tax authority, is a vital component of its broader digital reform agenda aimed at strengthening transparency, enhancing administrative efficiency, and promoting voluntary tax compliance across Nigeria’s economic landscape.
A central theme of the session was the importance of collaboration between the FIRS and major stakeholders such as the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS), the Nigeria Customs Service, commercial banks, and the business community. This cooperative approach, the agency explained, is crucial for achieving the intended outcomes of the initiative.
The FIRS noted that the electronic invoicing system will not only simplify how businesses report their transactions but also significantly reduce the risk of tax evasion. By enabling real-time tracking of commercial activities, the platform is expected to foster greater accountability in both public and private sector transactions.
“This multi-stakeholder strategy underscores our commitment to harnessing technology in order to improve the integrity of our tax system, drive operational efficiency, and build public confidence in tax administration,” the statement read.
The tax agency reaffirmed its dedication to implementing forward-thinking solutions that align with global best practices. It added that the success of the E-Invoicing Initiative would mark a pivotal step in achieving a more responsive and technology-driven tax environment for Nigeria.
With the committee now in place and key partnerships being established, the FIRS is expected to intensify efforts toward the full-scale deployment of the e-invoicing platform in the coming months, as part of its ongoing drive to transform the nation’s fiscal landscape.
