Abuja, Nigeria – September 11, 2025
Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, on Wednesday launched the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) Green Nigeria Challenge, a national competition designed to promote tree planting and environmental sanitation across households, communities, and states.
Unveiled during a quarterly meeting of RHI state coordinators and governors’ wives in Abuja, the programme is themed “Go Green Today for a Greener Tomorrow.” The Challenge runs until 2026 and seeks to mobilize citizens and local governments in addressing desertification, climate change, and urban waste management.
The initiative features three categories:
Household – ₦20 million prize for families, particularly in northern states vulnerable to desert encroachment, each required to plant at least one tree.
Community – ₦50 million prize for schools, youth groups, local governments, and NGOs to turn degraded spaces into green zones.
State – ₦100 million prize for state governments spearheading large-scale environmental renewal. Enugu State was named the inaugural Model Green State and awarded ₦100 million.
Mrs. Tinubu emphasized that the project reflects her administration’s broader Renewed Hope Agenda, integrating climate action into community development. The RHI will also collaborate with the Ministry of Environment to establish environmental clubs in secondary schools and tertiary institutions.
