FirstBank Refutes ₦55 Million Fraud Claim, Cites Unethical Dealings

FirstBank has denied allegations of fraudulent activity involving a ₦55 million fixed deposit transaction, as claimed by a customer, Dr. Agbai Eke.

In a widely circulated video, Dr. Eke alleged that the bank failed to return his deposit after an unauthorized withdrawal from his account at its former Abiriba branch, now relocated to Uzuakoli. He has since filed a lawsuit against the bank.

However, in an official statement, FirstBank dismissed the claims as false, asserting that Dr. Eke was involved in unprofessional dealings with a former employee, which led to unauthorized transactions conducted outside the bank’s knowledge or control.

“We can affirm that the allegations of fraud within the bank, as alluded to by Dr. Agbai Eke, are entirely unfounded. Investigations reveal unethical dealings between Dr. Eke and a former FirstBank employee, leveraging a personal relationship to facilitate transactions outside our banking system,” the statement read.

FirstBank further stated that it has referred the matter to law enforcement agencies for thorough investigation.

“As this case is currently before the Court, we will refrain from making further comments to allow due legal process to take its course. The bank has also reported the matter to law enforcement authorities for proper investigation. The suspects have provided useful statements, and inquiries are ongoing,” it added.

Reaffirming its commitment to ethical banking practices, FirstBank assured customers and stakeholders of its dedication to transparency, integrity, and the protection of clients’ interests.

“We remain committed to upholding the highest standards of professionalism and accountability,” the bank concluded.
