Five Chinese Nationals Convicted of Cyber Terrorism and Internet Fraud Repatriated from Lagos

Lagos, July 2, 2025 – Five Chinese nationals previously convicted of cyber terrorism and internet fraud by a Lagos federal court have been formally repatriated following the completion of their sentences, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) confirmed on Tuesday.

The defendants, whose names were among the 15 Chinese and other foreign nationals convicted in June, each pleaded guilty to charges under Section 18 of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act and the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act after being caught in the EFCC’s high-profile “Eagle Flush” sting operation in December 2024  . Operating from locations across Lagos, the syndicate ran elaborate internet fraud schemes, including romance scams and financial terrorism, targeting victims with the complicity of recruited agents.

In June 2025, the Federal High Court in Ikoyi sentenced 15 Chinese nationals to one year in prison and fined each ₦1 million, with the court ordering their repatriation upon serving their terms  . The five individuals were the first group to be released and deported after completing their sentences.

EFCC spokesperson highlighted that all electronic devices and fraudulent materials recovered during raids, such as computers, mobile phones, and routers, have been forfeited to the Federal Government, and coordination with the Nigeria Immigration Service ensured prompt deportation within seven days of sentence completion  .

Following the round-up of 792 suspects, including 158 foreign nationals, the EFCC has expressed its determination to dismantle transnational cybercriminal networks operating in Nigeria. Investigations continue into remaining cases, and further convictions are anticipated in the coming months.

The successful prosecution and swift repatriation are being hailed by analysts as a clear message that Nigeria will enforce its cybercrime laws with vigor, regardless of the nationality of offenders. Authorities have reiterated their readiness to pursue and prosecute anyone found engaging in cyber terrorism, economic sabotage, or internet fraud within the country’s jurisdiction.
